I hate budgeting. With a passion. So I had to find something that would work without being a total pain. I learned about the envelope system.

The envelope system works by creating categories using envelopes and funding them when you get paid. For example, we created a “Groceries” envelope and budgeted $400 per month for it. When I get my paycheck, $400 in cash is put in the envelope and it has to last for the entire month. When the envelope is empty, no more groceries.

The beauty of this method is that you spend your paycheck on paper (or in envelopes) before you get it. You won’t end up with too much month at the end of the money. All the bills get paid. Everyone is happy.
